The laws, health and spirituality of the people were untouched by non- Indians. They were known as great fisherman, eelers, basket weavers, canoe makers, story tellers, singers, dancers, healers and strong medicine people. Before given the name Yurok they referred to themselves as Oohl, meaning Indian people.
