The Yurok have inhabited the Northern California area on and near the Klamath River since time immemorial. Their languages is of the Algonquin stock and the nearest similar speaking tribe is located near the Great Lakes. They are “fix the earth” people as they dance numerous ceremonies to ensure balance in all aspects of life. The first contact with the Europeans was in late 1600’s when a Spanish ship noted seeing a ship off the coast of Trinidad. California gold rush, unlike other tribes In the area, did not have as destructive impact due to the fact that not a lot of gold was in Yurok land.
